Liesl Tan grew up in Singapore and first studied Animation at Nanyang Polytechnic's School of Digital Media Design. She graduated in 2008 with a Diploma of Merit in Digital Media Design (Digital Animation) and received the Lucasfilm Animation Singapore Award for outstanding animation work.

Liesl worked as a Computer Graphics Artist at Mediafreaks Pte Ltd for a year before moving to San Francisco to further her studies at the Academy of Art University. In May 2012, she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Animation and Visual Effects.
